About the instructor: Li Zhu was born and raised in China. After residing in Japan for over seven years, she currently resides in Florida, USA. She earned her B.A. in Japanese Studies from Shanghai International Studies University, her M.A. in English Translation from Xiamen University, and her Ph.D. in Chinese and Japanese language and literature from Nagoya University. Her dissertation, "New Insights about Akutagawa Ryunosuke’s Views toward China: From a Perspective of the West in the Same Era," explores cross-cultural perspectives in Asian studies.
Li completed her Ph.D. at Nagoya University over a six-year period, during which she also taught Chinese language and literature. Her research interests include modern Japanese literature, traditional Chinese opera, and travel literature. Her research on cross-cultural communication equips her with a broader perspective for teaching, enabling her to not only offer language lessons but also help students gain a deeper understanding of China or Japan. She customizes lessons based on students’ specific goals and current proficiency level. Additionally, she enjoys swimming, running, cycling, and is skilled in cooking.
About the class: Welcome to Complete beginner Mandarin class! This is an exciting journey you are embarking on to learn one of the most widely spoken languages in the world. This class is specifically designed for complete beginners or students who have very basic knowledge of Mandarin, so don't worry if you don't know anything yet.
Throughout this class, you will learn the basics of Mandarin, including pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, and sentence structure. We will start with the very basics, such as introducing yourself, greetings, and basic conversational phrases.
One of the most important aspects of learning Mandarin is mastering the tones. Mandarin is a tonal language, which means that the tone of a word can change its meaning. In this class, we will teach you how to distinguish and pronounce the four tones correctly.
